Community Caregivers’ volunteers provide non-medical services to elders, persons with disabilities and others in the community who need help living independently in their homes. Services are provided at no cost, contingent upon availability of volunteers and with 10 days’ notice once a client completes the intake process.
Services currently available are:
- Shopping: Either accompanying a client who needs assistance or shop from a client’s list for groceries, prescriptions and personal items. (client reimburses volunteer at time of delivery)
- Accessing Food from Food Pantries and Home Delivered Meals: Volunteers help clients select food at food pantries and deliver food to client’s homes.
- Meal preparation: Occasional help with meal prep.
- Transportation: Rides for clients to medical appointments, visits with family in nursing homes, beauty parlors/barber shops and to community events within the Capital District.
- Light Housekeeping: Occasional help with changing bedding, dusting, vacuuming.
- Assistance with Paperwork Help with sorting mail, organizing bills, completing forms/correspondence. Volunteers do not sign checks or act as Power of Attorney.
- Minor household maintenance: Occasional help with lawn mowing, yard cleanup/minor household repairs.
- Technology Assistance: Setting up computer, cell phone and explaining email etc.
- Friendly Phone Calls: Reassurance calls to provide an opportunity for conversation and socialization like a “friendly visit” but over the phone. One to two times a week.
- Friendly Home Visits; Weekly or biweekly visits to homebound people to provide social contact and emotional and psychological support. Visits may include trips into the community (walks, social events, etc).
- Lunchtime Chats: Group conference calls twice a week open to the public on a variety of topics that are educational and entertaining to reduce isolation an promote social connections.
- Information and Referral: Provide information about services available in the area and/or making direct referrals to appropriate agencies.
- Caregiver Respite: Visits in the home with someone who has an illness or disability to provide a break for a family/friend caregiver. Volunteers visit, talk, read or do crafts. Offered once a week for up to 1.5 hours a visit.
- Caregiver Support Group: Regularly scheduled support group facilitated by a professional for caregivers of persons with memory issues.
